TUPPER LAKE — The Alfred M. Aseel Legacy Scholarship at Adirondack Foundation is now accepting applications from non-traditional students from the Tupper Lake area.

The scholarship — named in honor of Alfred Aseel’s parents, Alfred Abraham and Fadwa Khechen Aseel — supports continuing education for individuals from Tupper Lake, Piercefield, Conifer and other nearby communities. It’s awarded to one recipient annually. The deadline to apply is Thursday, June 15.

The scholarship is available to non-traditional students attending an accredited college, university, trade school or certification program in the U.S. — including online programs — wishing to pursue an educational experience that allows them to “re-invent” themselves and their future. Demonstrated integrity and good character will be guidelines for selection.

Personal commitment and potential will also be considered as key characteristics allowing the students to succeed. Students must have a 2.5 GPA or higher to be eligible. The award is $5,000 and eligible students may reapply for up to four years. Renewal applicants will be required to complete agreement forms and must submit documentation certifying their GPA and enrollment status each year.

Applications must be submitted through Adirondack Foundation’s Online Grants Manager. To learn how the grants manager works and how to get started on an application, visit

Alfred Aseel passed away at age 78 in April 2017. Before his death, he left a bequest with Adirondack Foundation to support non-traditional students from the Tupper Lake area who wish to reinvent their lives through education, just as Aseel did after two tours in the U.S. Army. His bequest also promotes sustainable projects that enhance and improve the Tupper Lake community and lifestyle of its residents.
