Celebrating Olympic Excellence
Six local athletes who participated in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics received grants from the Uihlein-Ironman Sports Fund at Adirondack Foundation.
Since 2006, the Uihlein-Ironman Sports Fund at Adirondack Foundation has granted $90,000 to youth sports organizations and local young athletes. Six of these talented athletes are among the many locals who competed at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. This large contingent is a testament to the legacy of Lake Placid as a sports capitol of the world that nurtures young, talented athletes.
The Uihlein-Ironman Sports Fund was created in 2005 to help local athletes achieve their sports dreams. The fund came about through a partnership between the Henry and Mildred Uihlein Foundation, Ironman North America (now known as World Triathlon Corporation) and Adirondack Foundation.
"The Uihlein-Ironman Sports Fund provided me with funding when I was still a developing athlete," recalls biathlete Lowell Bailey. "At the time between regional success and a berth on a national team there is typically little funding available. For this reason, many athletes never reach their international potential."
Biathlete Tim Burke also received a grant from the Uihlein-Ironman Sports Fund at the same stage in his development.
"This type of support is absolutely crucial for local athletes if Lake Placid and our region want to continue to send its athletes to the Olympic Games," he says.
A large part of the funding goes to local athletes with potential. The selection committee also looks at athletes with a strong work ethic who give back to the community.
"The continued support from the fund has helped me accomplish the highest goal of my career," says Haley Johnson, who won a spot on the U.S. Biathlon team. "It has enabled me to keep my focus on training and performances."
Athletes are grateful for this local support. As Lowell Bailey commented, "I feel very fortunate to have grown up in Lake Placid and still call it my home. There aren't many communities in the United States that display such dedication to winter sports and their local athletes."
